One of my favourite places in the Mackenzie District is Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. Its stunning views are endless and the drive in is a treat in itself. Every turn is a different view, you find yourself pulling over multiple times just to take it all in.
Whenever someone asks my thoughts about having a photoshoot at Mount Cook, all I can say is HECK YES! Grace + JP were staying overnight in Twizel for JP’s birthday weekend getaway. We met just outside of Twizel at the start of the road leading into Mount Cook. We hopped in one car and started our journey into the mountains.
To get to the end of the road of Mount Cook, it takes about 45 minutes with no stops. You’ll definitely want to add in an extra 15-20 minutes because trust me, you’ll want to stop along the way!
What I love most about photographing at Mount Cook is all of the different views and you’re not limited to just one backdrop. As a photographer, the sun is very important and where that sun is shining can determine which way your couple is facing. Mount Cook has beautiful scenery no matter which way you’re facing so really, the space is your oyster! There’s tons of space to pull over, park and explore the big open fields.
Grace + JP were FULL of laughter and so much love, I don’t think there was a moment we weren’t laughing or making jokes with each other. The space surrounding Mount Cook is truly blissful. You feel so small being amongst a landscape that’s so big and there’s something very calming about that. There were moments where we’d be taking photos, Grace + JP totally captivated in the moment with each other, and we’d look around and just be in awe of what’s around us. I strongly believe the environment you’re in can pull out so much more love and emotion with your better half and it’s why photographing around landscapes like Mount Cook is something I will ALWAYS say yes to without hesitation.
